Home Tour: Reviving a Home with Spanish Character

Wedgewood Homes + Maverick Design came together to renew a charming home in Redlands, California. We found this special home featured a stately corner lot, single-story layout, and Spanish-inspired design elements. The property had been well maintained, and our goal was to celebrate the exciting character and architectural features of the home while enhancing the functionality for today's buyers.
The exterior of the home already had plenty of appeal. Maverick immediately envisioned a Spanish Hacienda inspired design. Using a lighter paint scheme on the home's exterior, the hand-painted tiled steps and adobe-style privacy fencing became the focus. In the front yard, the property featured existing landscaping that had become overgrown. We salvaged the existing plants with some pruning and care and created a natural, organic landscape to complement the stone pathways.
Inside the home, we set out to restore the existing finishes, the wood-beamed ceiling in the dining room, and original terracotta tile floors throughout the main living areas. These features served as a starting point of the design, focusing on preserving the charm throughout. We updated with paint and fixtures in the living and dining spaces and restored the original built-in shelving and French doors leading to the back courtyard. The kitchen cabinets were in poor condition, so we opted to install new cabinetry and improve the layout. We used a lighter palette of finishes and added contrast with a patterned tile floor to tribute to the Spanish style. Throughout the rest of the home, the team made thoughtful enhancements following the original character to bring the home back to life.
In the backyard, we updated the landscaping to enhance the private courtyard area. The spacious lot allows plenty of room for entertaining, complete with a fountain, stone pavers, and a covered patio. In the end, the team was pleased to see existing features come alive again for today's buyers.
